Breast Surgeries

Two options for breast surgery are available: Breast reconstruction can be performed with implants or with your own tissue. A doctor can use the lower abdominal wall segment, back muscle or fat of the woman to create new breast tissue. A mastectomy for nipple and skin sparing can be performed by a woman. Both of these methods can result in scarring. Breast surgeries are not right for everyone.

Breast reduction surgery

Most breast reductions are done outpatient. Patients may experience swelling and discoloration immediately after the procedure. This swelling will gradually disappear. Sutures and bandages will be removed in a few days and the patient should not resume strenuous activities for about a month. Although a breast reduction may cause discomfort, the breasts will soon look normal again. You will see results six months to one year later.

The surgeon will then make incisions in the skin near the natural creases in the breasts. Excess skin and fat will be removed through these incisions. Some women may have their breasts raised. The surgeon will close the incision with dissolvable internal or external sutures. The surgical recovery period may require an overnight stay. The patient will be released after being discharged from the hospital. It takes between 2 and 5 hours to perform the surgery.

Nipple-sparing mastectomy

A Nipple Sparing Mastectomy is an alternative to radiotherapy for breast carcinoma. This procedure preserves a patient's breasts and avoids radiation treatment. Even though not all women who are undergoing this surgery will do so, about 30% of those who are new to the procedure may not be required to undergo radiation treatment. In general, this type of surgery is a viable option for women with large or small breasts.

Although not readily available, this type of surgery has positive results. It preserves the entire outer layer of breast skin, as well the nipple area and darker circle. The NSM is typically followed by a breast reconstruction. While it isn't widely used for mastectomy it has been gaining popularity as an alternative to more traditional methods of treating breast cancer. Its benefits outweigh their disadvantages.

A skin-saving mastectomy

A skin-sparing mastectomy refers to a surgery in which all of breast skin is preserved, with the exception of the nipple, areola and nipple. This allows the surgeon not to scare the breast. The surgeon will then use a flap, or an implant to replace the volume. There are two types: the TRAM or Latissimus skin-sparing mastopexy. Both use the tissue and muscle of the breast to reconstruct it.

There are a number of advantages of skin-sparing mastectomy, including the preservation of the inframammary fold and native skin envelope. By preserving the native skin layer and the inframammaryfold, the procedure can improve the cosmetic outcomes of the breast reconstruction. This reduces the need to perform contralateral symmetrizing. There are some risks involved with skin-sparing mastectomy.

Modified radical breastectomy

A modified radical mastectomy may be an option for you if you are concerned about the potential risks involved in undergoing a mastectomy. A modified radical mastectomy is less invasive than a full-thickness, conventional mastectomy. It removes the breast, most lymph nodes, and the lining above the chest muscles. This type also preserves breast tissue. Not all surgeons are qualified to perform these types of procedures. Before deciding on which procedure to have, you should consult your doctor.

Most hospitals have adopted a traditional, modified radical mastectomy. However, it is not widely used. Traditional modified radical mastectomy techniques focus on protecting the intercostobrachial and anterior thoracic nervous systems. These nerves are to be preserved for sensory functions only. These techniques are very similar to the ones used in Patey's, Meyer's, Halsted and Meyer. Moore61 in 1867 described one such method.
